While organic material can decompose in a matter of days, all other waste takes time. When you’re looking at your packaging options, it’s important to know what can be recycled and also how long that material is going to break down once it’s been sent to landfill.

Decomposition rates do vary depending on multiple factors such as the weather, the amount of microorganisms in the soil where it lands, and if it’s buried or exposed to the elements. The following details are averages that take these factors into account.

Vegetables: 5 days to 1 month

Train tickets: 2 weeks

Paper towels: 2–4 weeks

Paper waste: 2–6 weeks. Paper waste takes only about a month—or a few weeks, give or take—to break down in landfills.

Cardboard: 2 months. Aside from recycling, cardboard can be composted, used as garden mulch, or repurposed creatively as craft material or pet bedding. It breaks down fairly quickly when it's exposed.
