2024 GRAPHIC DESIGN TRENDS

It’s shaping up to be an exciting year for graphic design as we explore AI design and the corresponding need for comfort in the face of this massive change with a move towards nostalgia, retro looks and fusions of the old and the new.

Here are the key trends tipped to be changing the landscape of graphic design in 2024.

3D AI-generated images

Whether you’re using it to boost your design options, create images or manage your work files, AI is going to have a bit impact this year. A key part of this shift is the trend towards using it to get creative with images that are almost cartoony in their rounded edges, bright colours, and childlike appeal. Expect to see lots of logos in this fun style.

The real people look

This trend is all about a shift away from images of unattainably ‘perfect’ people to using shots of people who look like someone you’d see in the street. Diversity is a big part of this trend too as is a desire for a real look to counter the artificiality of AI.

The feels

Designs that create texture are going to be the stand-out products this year as people head further into their need for comfort, reassurance, and the natural world. Think softness and physical sensations in the design and also the physical product. The colours and feel of nature are going to be high on these lists as sustainability grows in importance and public desire.

Nothing touches like paper.

Handmade and quirky

The idea is to make your fonts and logos look like they’ve been drawn by hand with a touch of animation to give them movement. Clever font adaptions that reflect an action your product promotes are also going to be popular.

This year’s hark back

Every year has its nostalgic, retro trend. This year it’s ‘60 / ‘70s colours and illustrations as another expression of the desire for that warm, handmade feel that’s part of rising digital fatigue and backlash against AI.

Less white space

Filling the page with content is in so lose the idea of space around the margins, or anywhere else for that matter. More is more this year.

Rules are made to be broken

Breaking design rules is an emerging trend that will bring some exciting design (and maybe some less than exciting) as creatives mix font weights and sizes as part of the trend to fill the page with busy content.

Minimalism isn’t completely out

It’s still in but as long as it looks classy and vintage. Think fonts and design that signal metal type set by hand by the artisan who made the product. Labels will showcase the product name and little else and have a touch of the playful.
